The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK, 汉语水平考试 hàn yǔ shuǐ píng kǎo shì), which is also known as the Chinese Proficiency Test, is a language proficiency test for Standard Mandarin Chinese used in Mainland China for non-native Chinese speakers. The HSK test was initially developed in Beijing Language and Culture University in the 1980s. The HSK test is administered by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (中外语言交流合作中心) or the Confucius Institute Headquarters 孔子学院总部 / Hanban 国家汉办 of the Ministry of Education the People's Republic of China 中国人民共和国教育部. Students can take HSK in over 150 countries, mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao. The test is not available in Taiwan.
The current HSK exams have 6 levels. There are only listening and reading exercises in HSK 1 and HSK 2. In addition to listening and reading, writing is tested in HSK 3, HSK4, HSK 5, and HSK 6. The Advanced Placement Chinese Language and Culture test (AP Chinese) is equivalent to the HSK 3-4.
People taking the HSK tests include non-Chinese who want to study, work or live in China, and those goal oriented Chinese language learners who like challenges.

Taking HSK classes enhances your Chinese proficiency even if you're not planning to take the HSK exams. HSK classes follow a structured curriculum based on the HSK test syllabus, which systematically covers a wide range of vocabulary, grammar points, and language skills. This builds a solid foundation and helps you progress steadily, filling in gaps in your knowledge.
The HSK levels (1-6) provide a clear roadmap for progressing from beginner to advanced levels. The course content is designed to match the appropriate level of difficulty, ensuring that you're challenged but not overwhelmed.
The HSK material incorporates authentic Chinese cultural elements. This exposure to cultural context enhances your understanding, especially if you plan to establish deeper connections in China.
