Chinese Proficiency Test

The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK, 汉语水平考试 hàn yǔ shuǐ píng kǎo shì), which is also known as the Chinese Proficiency Test, is a language proficiency test for Standard Mandarin Chinese used in Mainland China for non-native Chinese speakers. The HSK test was initially developed in Beijing Language and Culture University in the 1980s. The HSK test is administered by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (中外语言交流合作中心) or the Confucius Institute Headquarters 孔子学院总部 / Hanban 国家汉办 of the Ministry of Education the People's Republic of China 中国人民共和国教育部. Students can take HSK in over 150 countries, mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao. The test is not available in Taiwan.

The current HSK exams have 6 levels. There are only listening and reading exercises in HSK 1 and HSK 2. In addition to listening and reading, writing is tested in HSK 3, HSK4, HSK 5, and HSK 6. The Advanced Placement Chinese Language and Culture test (AP Chinese) is equivalent to the HSK 3-4.

People taking the HSK tests include non-Chinese who want to study, work or live in China, and those goal oriented Chinese language learners who like challenges.
